Background

The WIREC 2008 is the third international ministerial level conference on renewable energy, following Renewables 2004, held in Bonn, Germany and the Beijing International Renewable Energy Conference (BIREC 2005).

Over 100 countries attended the Bonn and Beijing events and worldwide enthusiasm for renewable energy has increased dramatically since 2005.  Nations now more fully recognize the imperative to promote wide spread adoption of renewable energy such as biofuels, wind, solar, geothermal, and hydro energies.   During the recently concluded U.S.-EU Summit, EU leaders expressed their support for and intent to attend the event, and participants at the June 2007 G8 Leaders meeting "welcomed concerted global action to promote renewable energy."

The Bonn meeting's website is:   http://www.renewables2004.de/

That meeting issued an "International Action Programme for Renewable Energy" to be found at:  http://www.renewables2004.de/en/2004/outcome_actionprogramme.asp

The agenda is found: http://www.renewables2004.de/en/programme/default.asp
